Section 23 of John Cary’s Map of England and Wales on a scale of 5 miles to the inch. The plate centres on Cirencester and includes Cheltenham, Gloucester, Lechlade, Malmsbury, Wotton Bassett, Calne, Chippenham, Marlborough and Devizes. 8 x 10 inches. Early hand colouring. Good condition.

WILTSHIRE

A well engraved detailed map of the county. Imprint of John Cary and dated 1793. 8 1/4 x 10 1/2 inches, 210 x 260 mm. Original outline hand colouring. Some of the town names are underlined in red. Good condition. With original page of descriptive text.

From: Cary's New and Correct English Atlas

The significance of some towns being underlined in red is given by the previous owner of the atlas John Hobson Matthews by means of a manuscript note in red ink he has added at the start of the atlas. He says

The places underlined in red ink are those in which a Catholic mission has been established between the era of the Reformation and the year 1840
John Hobson Matthews

John Hobson Matthews (1858 - 1914) Born in Croydon in 1858. Educated at schools at Blackheath and Cambridge. Worked for a shipping firm in Malta. A good linguist he was a Roman Catholic historian, archivist and solicitor. A MAP OF WILTSHIRE

An engraved county map with title panel, list of hundreds and description. The map is surmounted by a decorative baroque cartouche titled The Road from London to Weymouth. Strip road map on verso showing the route from south of Fakenham in Norfolk to Wells and the road from Newmarket to Bury St. Edmunds with engraved notes. Uncoloured. This map has come straight from the atlas and not sold previously as a single map.Good condition.

A early engraved miniature map of the county. Embellished with decorative cartouches which displays the title and scale. Numbered 12. 4 3/4 x 3 1/4 inches. A good clean uncoloured and undamaged specimen Small top blank margin which is quite common. The description of Wiltshire starts on the verso, in English but with the map is the following double sided page of text. The final piece of text appears on the verso of the map of Berkshire. Straight from the atlas and not previously sold as a single map. The title page of the atlas is dated 1627

An early map of the county engraved by William Kip after a survey by Christopher Saxton. Title cartouche, compass rose and scale with pair of dividers. 14 x 11 inches. Later hand colouring. Original centre fold. Traces of brown tape on verso on the top where the map has been in a sunk mount in the past. Good clean condition.
