A decorative17th century map of the region embelished with a decorative cartouche, ships, two compass roses and animals. 20 x 15 inches, 520 x 380 mm. Dutch text on verso. Uncoloured. Small hole in a blank area of the sea repaired, otherwise good condition. Text on verso showing through slightly on map.

An interesting engraved chart of the Island of Arguin which lies off the western coast of Mauritania in the Bay of Arguin. Embellished with an uncoloured rococo title cartouche which also displays the scale. 6 1/4 x 8 1/2 inches. Original blue outline and wash hand colouring. Good condition. Straight from the atlas and not previously sold as a single map.

Two map of one sheet. The upper chart shows the entrance to Sierra Leone River with the area that is now Freetown. Tagrin Bay is shown with the island of Tasso. Beneath is a map of the island of Bunce which shows the castle built by a British slave-trading company circa 1670. Together they measure 6 3/4 x 8 1/2 inches. Original blue outline and wash hand colouring. Good condition. Straight from the atlas and not previously sold as a single map.

An engraved chart of the small island of Gorée which lies off the coast of Dakar, the capital of Senegal in West Africa. The chart is embellished with a decorative uncoloured rococo cartouche. A panel provides an explanation listing 13 places of interest. Compass rose. 10 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches. Original blue outline and wash hand colouring. A few light foxing spots otherwise good condition.

Two engraved maps on one sheet. The upper map shows the entrance to the River Cestos which is today on the coast of Liberia, West Africa. The lower map is of Cape Montserrado which is headland on the coast of Liberia near the capital Monrovia. The Cape was used as a base for the slave trade. 6 1/4 x 8 1/2 inches. Original blue outline and wash hand colouring. Good clean condition. Straight from the atlas and not previously sold as a single map.

An engraved chart of part of the coast of Angola with the town of of Benguela. A decorative rococo cartouche displays the title and scale. Compass pointer and rhumb lines. 6 1/2 x 8 1/2. Original outline and wash hand colouring. Fine clean condition with a few black specks mainly in the blank margins. This map has come straight from the atlas and not previously been sold as a single map.

A copper engraved view of Castle of Elmina on the coast of Ghana, Africa. 12 1/2x 8 3/4 inches. Hand coloured. Original centre fold. Good condition. The print has been mounted on two sheets of thin card.
Elmina Castle was erected by the Portuguese in 1482 and is the oldest European building in existence south of the Sahara. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
