An impressive late 16th century copper engraving displaying four bird’s eye view of towns.
At the top left is the ancient city of Anfa which now lies to the west of Casablanca in Moocco. First occupied by the Berbers in the 10th century and then in the 15th century by the Romans. It became an important port and safe refuge for pirates which ended in the Portuguese destroying the town in 1468.
Top right is the is the city of Azemmour captured by the Portuguese 1513. An important fortress in North Africa at the time.
The centre image stretching right across is of the Indian city of Diu situated on the island of Diu which connects now by a bridge to the state of Gujarat.
The bottom image is of the city of Goa captured by the Portuguese in 1510 and became the capital of Portuguese India and became the centre of Portuguese power in Asia.
A most interesting engraving illustrating four important cities in the history of the Portuguese Empire during this period. French text on verso. Original centre fold. 18 1/2 x 13 1/4 inches. Fine clean condition.

MAP OF INDIA CONSTRUCTED WITH GREAT CARE AND RESEARCH FROM ALL THE LATEST AUTHORITIES AND INTENDED MORE PARICULARLY TO FACILITATE A REFERENCE TO THE CIVIL AND MILITARY STATIONS, DEDICATED TO SIR JAMES RIVETT CARNAC BART.
An early edition of this most influential map of India at the time. It was created to illustrate the administrative and military control by the British East India Company over India. First issued in 1837. As it says near the base of the map “This Map will serve to illustrate ther Dispatches of the Duke of Wellington. A lithograph folding map with original hand colouring. Dissected and laid on linen opening out to 26 x 38 1/4 inches. The map folds into its original titled cloth covered card case measuring 5 1/4 x 9 inches. The map was prepared under the direction of Captain R. M. Grindlay and is divided into 119 numbered squares. In the top right hand corner is a large distance table. In the bottom right hand corner is an extensive key to Military Stations, Collectorates and Civil Stations. A few light pencil notes in a blank area near the top of the map. Good clean undamaged condition. Slipcarse in good condition.
With this map is a separate 8vo volume titled INDEX TO WYLD'S MAP OF INDIA CONTAINING THE NAMES OF THE TOWNS, MILITARY & CIVIL STATIONS......
114 printed pages with two folding maps. Also bound into the volume is a Catalogue of Atlases, Maps, plans globes and Astronomical statistical & Geographical Works. 48 printed pages with the price for each item. Extremely interesting.

Three very small nicks on the edge of the centre fold on the left hand side. Otherwise good clean condition.
