South America Richard Blome c.1680
A NEW MAPP OF AMERICA MERIDIONALE. A decorative 17th century map of South America. Embellished with decorative title and dedication cartouches. The deication is to the Worshipfull John Jefferys of Llywell in Breconshire and of the City of London. This has been printed on a separate piece of paper which has been pasted over a previous subscriber to the atlas. Ships and sea monsters. 20 3/4 x 15 1/4 inches. Hand coloured. Some light scattered foxing. Small section of the bottom left hand blank margin replaced. Original fold creases.
This map was the first folio sized map of South America to be engraved in England This map first appeared in Blome's A Geographical Description Of The Four Parts Of The World... London: Printed By T. N. For R. Blome... And For Convenience Are Also Sold By Nath. Brooks... Edw. Brewster... And Tho. Basset 1670. The completed volume was in small folio, and contained 24 maps (plus one duplicated), engraved by Francis Lamb, Thomas Burnford and Wenceslas Hollar. Richard Blome had problems in raising the capital to publish an atlas but he devised an ingenious method of funding the project by subscriptions. The subscriber would receive a copy of the atlas upon publication and would find the map he had chosen would bear his coat of arms and a dedication to himself. When a further edition of the atlas was published subscribers were approached for a renewal fee. Failing to renew resulted in their arms and dedication being removed from the map and a new subscriber’s arms being added. I am not sure how many different men the map of South America was dedicated to but the map was first dedicated to George Duke of Albemarle, Earl of Torrington. Using a light to try and see the earlier dedication below I can be certain it is not George Duke of Albemarle but appears to be to James Duke of Monmouth. The map of Scotland in Blome’s Britannia is dedicated to James Duke of Monmouth. So it would appear that John Jefferys was at least the third subscriber to Blome’s map of South America.
This map has been framed in a collection for many years so the first time on the market again for quite some time
