John Luffman was an author, engraver and publisher as well as a goldsmith. To the collector of county maps he is best known for his unusual and so easy to identify maps being small and circular with descriptive text below. First published by him in the New pocket atlas and geography of England and Wales in 1803. There was a further edition in 1806 published by Lackington, Allen & Co.
The atlas has a general map of England and Wales showing the division into counties. There is a total of 52 county. 42 English county maps and 12 Welsh county maps. Unusually Yorkshire is depicted on 3 maps of the Ridings. The circular maps are some 58mm in diameter. You will find uncoloured examples, maps with original outline or outline and wash colouring as in the photographs n this page taken from a copy of the atlas in my own collection. And no doubt examples with modern hand colouring will exist. The format for each page is the same. At the top is the map above which is a small plate number. Beneath the map is a description of the county in English. The descriptions do not continue on verso.
This unusual atlas must have been a somewhat curiosity at the time. Not a serious work of cartography but a gentle illustrated introduction to the counties of England and Wales. Somethng we might consider now as the perfect gift for someone we know.
You will come across some changes in the spelling of some counties. Including
WESTMORLAND - Westmoreland
ANGLESEY - Anglesea
BRECONSHIRE - Brecknockshire
CARMARTHENSHIRE - Caermarthenshire

A very distictive and unusual series of county maps. Perhaps more for the serious map collector. I have not sold a great number over the years probably due to their scarcity but also I have never split the atlas they appear in. A special addition to a county map collection
