ILE DE FRANCE
Île-de-France is one of the ancient provinces of France, and the one that played perhaps the most crucial role in French history. Today, the territory of the province of Île-de-France is divided between the Île-de-France région and the Picardie région.
The name first appears in 1387, replacing the older "Pays de France" when the word pays began to mean nation rather than region or area. The area around Paris was the original personal domain of the king of France, as opposed to areas ruled by feudal lords of whom he was the suzerain. This is reflected by divisions such as the Véxin Français and the Véxin Normand, the former being within the King of France's domain, the latter being within the Duke of Normandy's fief.

Small blank margins on the left and right sides. Two small ink marks above the cartouche and two in the top blank margin. Otherwise nice clean crisp condition.

A coloured lithograph sheet the lower half displaying a town plan of Paris. Above the Paris plan are six small charts of Boulogne, Cherebourg, Brest, Le Havre, Toulon Harbour, Marseilles. 11 1/2 x 17 1/2 inches. Good condition. From The Royal Illustrated Atlas published by Archibald Fullarton and Company.
This map was put into a dark green sunk mount and framed in a black and gilt hogarth moulding. This is still in good condition.
