Established in 1961
William Gawin Herdman (1805–1882), often referred to as W. G. Herdman, was a British painter and author best known for his landscapes and topographical scenes — especially views of Liverpool and its surroundings. He was largely self-taught, beginning to sketch from around age 13 and documenting the city’s architectural and social transformations as Victorian Liverpool grew.
He exhibited his works at the Royal Academy in London from 1834 to 1861.
Herdman was deeply involved in Liverpool’s artistic life: he joined the Liverpool Academy of Arts in 1836, later founding the Liverpool Society of Fine Arts in opposition to what he saw as the overly fashionable tendencies of the art establishment.
He was not just a painter but an observer of his city — making notes on how Liverpool changed over time and portraying it with a mix of topographical accuracy and personal style.
