There is so much to learn about the early cartographers and thankfully there is a large selection of excellent reference books on the subject. When I started dealing in maps in the 1960's there were far fewer books. Maps and Mapmakers by R. V. Tooley was a very popular volume. So popular that edtions used to sell out. After a fair wait the publishers Batsfords would realise and a new welcome edition appeared in the bookshops.
