Plan of Brussels by John Tallis c.1851
John Tallis (1817–1876) was a British publisher and engraver best known for producing some of the most decorative and visually striking maps of the 19th century. Working during the height of the Victorian era, Tallis published richly detailed maps of countries, regions, and cities around the world, combining geographic information with elaborate borders, architectural vignettes, and scenes of local life.
His most famous work, The Illustrated Atlas of the World (1851–1854), showcased engraved maps accompanied by illustrations of prominent landmarks, people, and cultural features, making them both informative and highly ornamental. Tallis’s maps are celebrated today for their craftsmanship, artistic elegance, and historical insight, and they remain prized by collectors, historians, and enthusiasts of antique cartography.
No maps of counties for the collector but an extremely interesting series of plans of towns and cities in the British Isles.
