Alain Manesson-Mallet is best known to map collectors for the large number of maps, plans and views that appear in his 5 volume work Description de l'Univers,,, first published in Paris in 1683 with a tother edition published in Frankfurt in 1685. Previous to this he had been a musket bearer in the regiment of guards to Louis XIV and then he became an engineer and Seargent Major of artillery in Portugal Later retaining to France and serving the King.
