Unusual Miniature Map

29633 Essex and Kent, Aristide M. Perrot, 1823. Price: 50.00

ESSEX KENT. A miniature engraved map by Adrien Migneret of the two counties within a pictorial border. 2 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches. Original outline hand colouring. Vertical crease on the left of the map. Traces of two pieces of white tape on verso probably used to hold the map into a mount at some time. Otherwise good condition.

Rare Playing Card Map

29634 Essex, Robert Morden / Homan Turpin, c.1770. Price: 300.00

ESSEX. The rare state of Robert Morden’s Playing card first published in 1676. The plates eventually came into the possession of of the bookseller Homan Turpin who flourished from about 1764 to 1787. The cards were issued without the suit marks. 2 1/4 x 3 1/2 inches. Uncoloured.

AN ACCURATE MAP OF THE COUNTY OF ESSEX DIVIDED INTO ITS HUNDREDS... A good large detailed 18th century map of the county embellished with a large uncoloured pictorial cartouche showing a framer leading two calves. A rococo cartouche displays the dedication to Benjamin Mildmay Earl Fitzwalter. Around the map are the usual engraved historical notes. Beneath the map is the publishers imprint mentioning John Bowles, Carington Bowles and Robert Sayer. 28 x 20 inches. Hand coloured. About nine marginal tears repaired on verso with sellotape and masking tape.

ESSEXIA COMITATUS. A fine decorative 17th century map of the county. Title banner, scale cartouche with three putti. Royal Arms, Arms of England and A panel displaying seven coats of arms and a blank shield. Five ships. 20 1/2 x 16 1 /4 inches. Original 17th century hand colouring. Two small nicks on the edge of the wide left hand side blank margin. A very small sliver of surface loss in the top printed border towards the top left hand side. Light crease in the bottom right hand blank margin extending slightly into the map area. Otherwise good condition with wide blank margins. Dutch text on verso.

Hand coloured. Good condition. Presented in an ivory tint sunk mount with a line and wash border. Framed many years ago in black and gold hogarth moulding which is is still in good condition.

An uncoloured road map on verso from Chelmsford to south of Bury St. Edmunds with coat of arms and engraved notes. 4 x 7 inches. Hand coloured on both sides. Good condition other than a 3 inch split across the top of the cartouche which is not very noticeable and therefore a special price.

LE COMTE D’ESSEX. An engraved map of the county embellished with a title panel, scale and compass rose. Hand coloured. 8 x 6 1/4 inches. Evidence of two early vertical folding creases. A little very light creasing in the top left hand corner otherwise good condition.

Pieter van der Aa was one of a small group of European cartographers who produced a series of county maps of England

An untitled engraved chart of Leith embellished with a large inset prospect of Leith from the East. Decorative cartouche with figure bearing a dedication to the Rt. Hon. Sir James Fleming. Coat of Arms held by two putti. Two ships. Compass rose. 22 x 17 inches. Hand coloured. Some restoration is evident the top of the centre fold and to the bottom of the centre fold.

CHESHIRE. A decorative Victorian map of the county within an architectural border. Embellished with vignette views of Chester Cathedral and Eaton Hall. Seven coats of arms. 10 x 7 inches, 255 x 190 mm. Uncoloured. Good condition. This is an early edition of the map with the imprint beneath the map Engraved for Moule’s English Counties by W. Schmollinger 27 Goswell Terrace.

The map was framed some years ago probably in 1986 when I first sold it. The black and gilt frame is still in fair condition and just needs some of the black area touching up where the gilt is showing though. This map is only available to customers who can collect from Christleton.

NORTHAMPTON. An interesting engraved Georgian plan of the town embellished with a vignette view of Northampton which stretches right across the base of the plan. My interest in antique maps was sparked by a map dealer named P. J. Radford who lived in Denmead near Portsmouth. He got me going and by 1961 I had started to buy and sell antique maps and prints. By the late 60's I had opened a shop in Watergate Street Chester. The shop closed in 1998 when the whole business was moved to the internet.
